An email header contains technical information about a message, including the route it took before reaching your inbox.
The steps to retrieve an email header vary depending on the email client you use.
Outlook Express
• Select the email you want to inspect
• Go to “File”
• Click “Properties,” then “Details”
• Open “Message Source” to view the email’s Internet headers
Microsoft Outlook 2003
• Open the email
• Go to “View,” then “Options”
• The full email header appears at the bottom of the window
Microsoft Outlook 2007
• Right-click the email
• Select “Message Options”
• The full email header appears at the bottom of the window
Microsoft Outlook 2010
• Double-click the email to open it
• Go to the “Message” tab
• Click the small arrow in the “Tags” section
• The full email header is displayed in the window
Microsoft Outlook 2013/2016
• Double-click the email to open it
• Go to “File”
• Select “Info,” then “Properties”
• The full email header appears in the “Internet headers” section
Gmail
• Open the email
• Click the three-dot “More” menu
• Select “Show original”
• The email header and technical details will be displayed
• Click “Copy to clipboard” to copy the header
Hotmail
• Open the email
• Click the three-dot menu
• Select “View message source”
• The full email header will appear in a new window
Mozilla Thunderbird
• Select the email
• Press “Ctrl+U” to open the message source
Mail on Mac
• Select the email
• Go to “View,” then “Message”
• Click “All Headers”
Microsoft Outlook 2011 for Mac
• Right-click the email
• Select “View Source”
